MP Demands ksh60m Over Defamation Claims Linked to High School Principal’s Death

MP demands ksh 60m over Defamation Claims Linked to High School Principal’s death

Lugari MP Nabii Daraja Nabwera has moved to court seeking KSh60 million in compensation from three bloggers for allegedly publishing defamatory statements linking him to the death of Munyuki High School principal Simon Isiaho Shange.

The application, filed at Milimani Commercial Court in Nairobi, sees the MP seeking KSh20 million from each of the three bloggers, arguing that the remarks were deliberately made to tarnish his reputation as a public figure.

The MP is also seeking to bar the Respondents and any persons acting under their direction from making or sharing further statements about him.

Nabwera, represented by advocate Danstan Omari, maintains that the posts specifically mentioned him by name and political office, including references such as “MP Nabwera” and “MP for Lugari,” leaving no doubt about whom the statements targeted.

The MP’s lawsuit, certified as extremely urgent, alleges that from October 3, 2025, the three defendants,Peter Amunga, George Opunga Tamata, and Simon Asievela used Facebook pages including “Kakamega Post,” “Malava Online,” and “Lugari Watchdog” to disseminate “false, malicious, unqualified, inaccurate, and injurious statements” linking him to the principal’s tragic death.

“The statements were false, malicious and intended to tarnish my name as a public figure.”the petition stated.

According to the court papers, Nabwera asserts that the posts were false, unsubstantiated, and published with malicious intent, triggering online reactions that amplified the damage to his public standing.

The application cites Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, which criminalizes the publication of false information intended to discredit a person.

“The remarks have caused immense harm to my reputation and leadership. I am ready to comply with any court terms to safeguard my integrity,” the MP said.

The defamation case comes amid continued attention in Lugari on the death of principal Simon Isiaho Shange, whose body was recovered along a river following a road accident along the Eldoret–Malaba highway on November 3, 2025. His vehicle had earlier been found crashed near Muge black spot, but the principal was not at the scene, prompting a search effort.

Community member Tabitha Daraja has urged the DCI to conduct thorough investigations and called on residents to remain calm and avoid politicizing the matter.

KNUT Kakamega East Branch Secretary went ahead and condemned the harassment of educators in Lugari, saying female teachers were being objectified to access CDF funds. Hon. Patrick Chungani of the KNUT said: “Teachers are not punching bags. We demand immediate intervention to protect their dignity.”

The matter is expected to be mentioned on November 12,2025 before the Chief
Magistrate  Commercial court.
