According to the investigating officer, the matter was reported at Parklands Police Station under OB/34/17/11/2025 by a member of the public, leading to Maingi’s arrest on November 17, 2025, at his apartment in Kilimani. Officers reportedly found him dressed in full Kenya Air Force regalia bearing the name tag “MJ Muimi” and insignia of a brigadier.
"The police trailed the suspect to an apartment in Kilimani and established that the respondent had rented a furnished apartment. He was found dressed in full Kenya Airforce military regalia with a name tag M J MUIMI, brigadier in rank together with Gorget patches,"stated the prosecution in court.
A search conducted at the residence allegedly yielded several items, including, six admission letters and seven calling letters bearing the same serial number, fingerprints forms,an ID card and a KCSE certificate believed to belong to the victim and a Toyota Axio motor vehicle, which was impounded.

Investigators also seized the military uniform and related accoutrements to verify whether they originated from the Department of Defence (DoD). The IO noted that the duration for DoD to authenticate the items was unknown.
"The respondent was at a furnished apartment purporting to be a KDF officer in the rank of a brigadier who was issuing ministry of defense calling letter to unsuspecting Kenyans for them to report to recruit training school (RTS) in Eldoret today 17th} November 2025,"the motion stated.
Preliminary information from military officers indicated that one Brenda Chepkorir from Kericho, whose name appears on the KCSE certificate recovered, claimed to have paid Sh510,000 to the suspect with the promise of joining the Kenya Army. Detectives now seek to trace her and record her statement.
The prosecution argued that the suspect is a flight risk and has no known permanent residence, despite telling the court that his family lives abroad.
Magistrate Onyina granted the DCI’s request to detain Maingi at Parklands Police Station for seven days to finalize investigations.
The matter will be mentioned on November 24, 2025 in Milimani law courts for further directions.
