Court blocks ODM decision to remove Edwin Sifuna as secretary general
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) has temporarily suspended the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s decision to remove Edwin Watenya Sifuna as Secretary General, pending the hearing and determination of a case he filed challenging the move.
In orders issued on February 12, 2026, Acting Chairperson Gad Gathu directed that “the implementation of the resolution made by the National Executive Committee… be stayed” until the application is heard and determined.

The Tribunal also restrained the respondents from publishing or acting on the decision to remove Sifuna, including any intended publication in the Kenya Gazette, preserving the status quo within the party leadership.
The case, filed by Sifuna against ODM and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, was certified as urgent, with the Tribunal ordering immediate service of the complaint and application.
Respondents have been given seven days to file and serve their responses, while Sifuna may file a supplementary response within three days after service, if necessary.
The matter will be mentioned on February 26, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. to confirm compliance and give further directions as the intra-party dispute awaits full hearing.
Edwin Sifuna’s ouster arose from a February 11, 2026 resolution by ODM’s National Executive Committee seeking to remove him from his position as Secretary General, prompting him to move to the Tribunal to challenge the decision and halt its implementation
